Common Mistakes in Choosing a Life Partner

Choosing a life partner deserves time, and noticing these common mistakes can help you choose with a settled heart and a clear mind.

Marriage is one of the biggest decisions we ever make, yet we often make it under pressure from age, family and comparison with everyone around us. This article is not meant to frighten you or send you looking for a perfect person; nobody is perfect. It is meant to help you enter this stage with open eyes, aware of mistakes many people make with the best of intentions.

Rushing because of age and other people's opinions

“All your friends are married.” “Time is passing.” “Don't refuse, a better one may never come.” These things are usually said with love, but they can push you into a yes that has not had time to ripen. Fear of being late is a poor adviser, because it makes you ask “Will I get married?” instead of “Is this person right for me?”

Take your time to ask, think and seek advice, within what your faith and your family's customs allow. Being unhurried here is wisdom, not hesitation or fussiness.

Being dazzled by appearances and overlooking character

A respected job, a pleasant appearance and a well-known family all carry weight, but none of them tells you how this person will treat you when he is angry, when you are ill, or when circumstances become tight. Everyday life is shaped by faith, manners and temperament: honesty, mercy, a sense of responsibility and the ability to apologise.

Ask about him from people who have seen him in serious situations, not only in social gatherings. How does he speak about his mother and sisters? How does he behave when he disagrees with someone? These small details are more truthful than any CV.

Ignoring the signs and hoping he will change

One of the most repeated sentences is “He will change after marriage.” People do grow, but marriage does not create a new person. If during the engagement you notice your opinion being brushed aside, uncontrolled anger, or vagueness about basic matters, do not silence the voice inside you. Ask, discuss, and involve your family or someone whose judgement you trust.

The opposite is also true: do not base your decision on the idea that you will change completely to please him. A comfortable marriage rests on mutual acceptance, not on a repair project.

Staying silent about the important questions

Many marital disagreements start from things that were never discussed. Where will we live? How does he feel about your work or studies? How will money be managed? How far will each family be involved? How does each of you picture raising children?

Raising these questions politely and clearly, in the setting your family is comfortable with, is not being too bold. It shows respect for you both, and is far better than discovering the answers after the marriage contract.

Pray istikhara and seek counsel

Istikhara brings calm to the heart, and consulting others shows the mind angles it had not seen. Combine the two, listen to experienced people who want good for you, and then give yourself a moment of honesty: do I feel at peace with this decision, or am I trying to talk myself into it?

Before you decide
